Sorry Ugly Kids, Your Parents Don't Love You.
An article in the New York Times on Tuesday cited a study that says ugly kids get less attention from their parents than good looking kids. The observers watched kids and parents in supermarkets and rated the kidson good lookingness from like 1 to 10 or something.
Good looking kids get strapped into seatbelts 3 times more than ugly kids. Ugly kids are allowed to stand up in shopping carts and walk away from their parents without being reprimanded.
There's no concrete explanation for this, but one of the ideas is that, from an evolutionary standpoint, we need the good looking kids to survive and procreate, whereas we need the ugly kids to not survive and procreate since no one wants to get with them.
One of the experts said that's probably not true because there's no evidence that good looking people have more kids than ugly people, and that would need to be true for the evolutionary thing to happen.
I don't know about all that, all I know is that the day of the ugly kids is over. Sucks for you, ugly kids.

Statistically, I bet there's more of a correlation between birth rates and various ethnic groups / religions.
But regarding the ugly kid thing, maybe there's more of a correlational rather than a causal relationship between not wearing seat belts and ugliness. (How is "ugliness" objectively defined?) Like, ugly parents are less likely to be educated or something like that, and therefore make poor choices (like not seat belt-ing their kids).

I think there's some truth to the statement that ugly kids are less likely to be buckled up.
Follow this train of thought.....
Someone who is self conscious about their appearance will preen themselves to look better. Someone who can afford make-up, hairspray, shaving cream, razors, etc. will be able to dress them selves up to look better (thus being less ugly). Someone who has a steady job will be able to afford such toiletries and have the self confidence to uphold their good appearances. Someone who has an education is more likely to have a steady job.
(IMHO) An uneducated person is more likely to leave their child unbuckled.
The ugliness and unbuckledness are not cause and effect, however they are related. The childs ugliness and unbuckledness are indirect results of the parent not being educated.
